I'm new to having a laptop and mine is supposed to play dvds yet it skips after about a half hour of watching a dvd. Why does it do this and how can I make it stop?

It might be overheating, the CPU actually performs the playback on most laptops, if it gets too hot, the CPU will slow down to prevent more heat. Because it slowed down, you don't have enough power to process the DVD so it skips frames to keep at pace.

Try putting the laptop on some tiny feet or something, only 1/2″ can make a big difference.
