When u keep the laptop on your lap, the clothwear u r wearing blocks the vent of air through which hot air from the heat sink is pushed out by the small fans inide the laptop. Its like blocking the ventilation system. The CPU and other sensitive parts of the laptop during that period gets heated up and due to which the laptop hangs.
When u lift the laptop again from your lap, the air begines to flow resulting in to cooling of these parts and the laptop continues to work as usualy.

Its always suggested that u place the laptop on an ever surface. There are small hinges below the laptop which acts as stand which lifts up the laptop above the ground thus creating a void area for the air flow.

you should never put a laptop on lap, it blocks the vents from pushing hot air out of the laptop. if you put it in your lap, the heat will stay in the laptop, which causes overheating and low performance. sit it on a hard flat surface, especially not carpet. You could also purchase a cooling pad to keep it even more cooler
