Toshiba laptop with attached monitor. Went thru display settings to return laptop monitor to be default. won't?

display settings identify attached monitor as #1 and laptop monitor as #2. I am trying to switch them back but it won't apply. I click on button to extend to # 2 and click on button to make the laptop display the default setting, but returns to original setting every time. Please advise.
Answer:
what happens if you turn pc off, disconnect monitor, turn it (pc) on again…. maybe it's confused!
