Answer:
Motherboards in that series are bad.

Many have gone bad. So many infact, HP extended manufacturers warrenty by 1 year.

I would first find out if your laptop has the old laptop, or the new revision they're replacing in all the old ones (and for reason of extending warrenty). A zillion of their motherbotherds went defunct because of wrong bios control of fans and graphics chipset. (in dv6000)

So much so, they added 1 Years to warrenty of all of them! This happened just recently.

Since you stated “fact”, I'm currently searching for an online source. And will edit that in.

EDIT TO BENNY, from his EDITS:

1) Mostly the dv6000. Some others though. Visually, it's the black laptops and black shiny top plate when opened. A lot of the same motherboard problems present there (most are dv6000) and some not in that series also have problem.

I'm still looking around hp's site for a “fact” post, but seems it's not there…. but I can post hundreds of anecdotes if you like, about people with bad mb (ie: lights turn on, blank screen, hp replaced it for free) and of warrenty extention :)

Edit#2

2) I thought of a way to trick them. Can you see the serial of the display model? If so write it down, then call HP support and tell them “the lights on the computer come on, but no display” and ask if warrenty was extended and if they had a MB problem.
