I want to upgrade my cpu and I’m planning to order from this website http://www.compusa.com/applications/category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=22 , and i want to know if i can only put a specific type of processor in my dell inspiron 1501 or if i just can stick anyone in there
Answer: Laptop processors usually aren't upgradeable. Aside from different power and thermal designs than desktop processors (the processors you've found on CompUSA.com are all for desktops), laptop motherboards are often designed with locked CPU settings like FSB speed, voltage, and core multiplier.
That's the trade-off for portability.
Answer: you can upgrade the cpu based on the specifications on your existing motherboard. go to your laptop's website and look for your model and find the motherboard specs. then see what the maximum speed of the CPU the board can handle. Then check to make sure what socket sizes your board can handle. No point in buying an i7 CPU if you board only accepts Core 2.
Answer: According to Dell's service manual you can replace your processor. Problem will be finding one compatible that’s still on the market.
Answer: no, no, no and no. You can’t upgrade a laptop's cpu
