and a couple of times a week my laptop freezes when trying to switch on, I then have to turn it off and do Start up repair. Once this is done my antivirus seems to go back to when I first installed it and I have to download the Virus definitions and do live update. Does anyone know why this keeps happening?

Have you tried downloading Vista SP1? Some of the bugs and errors from the pre-SP1 Vista are fixed in it?

How old is your laptop? If it is still under warranty send it back for a warranty repair, make sure you save your important files before returning it, they’ll often format it first and fix later!

It sounds like you might have a hard drive or memory error or another possibility is the CPU fan has failed and it is overheating, but this would normally bring up the “freeze” each time you booted it.

To run the Begin repair option indicates that the drive is not retaining the information or not making it available, but this might be because the memory failed to write that info to the drive.

I would send it back if its under warranty or take it to a repair shop to get it tested if you’re not able to do it yourself.
