Do i need to use a laptop cooling pad? Will this increase its performance and extend its life?

Answer:
Yes, even if you don't game or use very demanding programs it is good to keep the temperature as low as possible, especially if the core temperature is over 60 C. There is a free program called CoreTemp that you can install and it will show you the internal temperature of your CPU's:

(looks like there is a site error right now, you'll have to try later)

A laptop cooler would be a very good thing to get but if you don't want to spend the money for one, a cheap but less effective (but still good) substitute would be to use a cooling rack that’s meant for putting pots/pans on or you can use a sealed ice pack underneath it while gaming/etc, as long as you aren't blocking the air vents. :)
