I personally use Trend Micro and have never suffered any serious viruses.
Some people advocate Norton, but in my experiences I’ve found it to slow down the whole system.
As well as Trend Micro, I also have the virus scanners: Ad-Aware, Spybot, Malwarebytes' Anti Malware, and Stinger, all of which are free.
Trend Micro, and these scanners combined give me pretty good protection. (You can get Trend Micro from TPB, type that in google.)

Trend and norton are OK but are not free. I Personally use AVG and find it just as good, if not better than trend. Another good one is Avira, But i still prefer AVG.
