I keep rolling my mouse around where the dock usually is and going to dock preferences, but it won't show up. Nothing is there and the icons have just disappeared.

Answer:
1,try going into safe boot by holding shift when you turn it on. does it still happen- if it does not then a setting or an app could be causing it. If it does then unless OSX still loads whats causing it your dock might be corrupt.

2. try running a disk check from the osx install disc.

3. try deleting the settings in your personal library folder HDD>users>(username)>library>preferences (I can't remember the exact location.

check for a dock preference.

Also I would avoid HP and most other Laptops because they run Vista which IMO “sucks”, Besides they don't run OSX (unless you are willing to do it illegally).

Answer:
You click on the Apple icon at the upper left hand side of the screen and select system preferences from the menu. Then it shows all the icons including the dock icon. You click on it so that it opens the window. On the menu bar right beside the Apple icon, it says doc so that you click on it and select preferences and that gives you all options to hide or not hide the dock or other options you want. Ü
