What kind of computer/laptop should I get?

I've had my compaq personal for 4 years almost. At first it was my mom's but then she got a apple mac book pro. For some reason now it won’t turn on. The monitor won't turn on(I've had the monitor for years, it used to be my dad's)and now the personal won't turn on. I would prefer getting a laptop but a regular personal is fine too. I mostly use my personal for internet, yahoo messenger, essays for school, and occasionally the sims 2. What kind should I get?

First off, Stay away from Dell. They begun using Windows Vista and its crap. I highly suggest MacBook, great qulity and good prices.
