what are some MUST HAVES for a students laptop?

Answer:
Well stick with Windows Vista/ or XP for the operating system. As for software Microsoft Office is a must have for any computer. You could go with the basic Inspiron 1525

Ultra-Affordable 15.4” Hi-Def Screen the first choice off of the Dell website and it will fit your needs just fine. The software will really mold what you needs are for school, as for hardware you won't have to worry as much because this laptop should be just fine for your needs.

Answer:
A simple laptop for school doesn't need much. I typically look for a massive hard drive, high memory, a fast processor, etc.

If I were you, I would get an Alienware Area 51 notebook. Though Alienware is a gaming computer, you can easily customize it to fit your needs. You want a weak graphics and gaming card yet more efficient core components.

Be advised, Alienware doesn't come cheap, that's why I don't have one.

By the way, Alienware was purchased by Dell, so you’re within your limits.

Answer:
Dell. The Inspiron line starts at $500 and as they come configured for that price will fit your needs fine.
